These sample maps were created by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Waterborne Commerce Statistics Center (WCSC). Waterway spatial databases were loaded by WCSC into TransCad (Caliper Corporation); selected screen images were then saved as bitmap files and converted to gif files. Please note that the state and country boundaries shown in these sample maps are not included as data files on the CD-ROM.
The purpose of including sample maps on the waterway CD-ROM is to give all users the ability to display pre-selected views of spatial databases on the CD-ROM without requiring Geographic Information System (GIS) capabilities. The sample maps are "snapshots" of the databases. Waterway CD-ROM users with Geographic Information System (GIS) platforms can also load raw spatial data to view the data and related attributes as desired (i.e., zoom in on a user defined geographic area rather than being limited to the fixed views selected for these maps).
